Overview of SELMA
The Sustainable European Livestock & Meat Association (SELMA) is committed to promoting sustainable practices and fostering collaboration among the wide range of operators making up the European livestock sector.
Our mission is to enhance knowledge-sharing, advocate for the interests of our members, and drive sustainable livestock and meat production practices. With a focus on the upcoming European legislative cycle, SELMA is dedicated to being at the forefront of policy advocacy and industry advancement.
Bovine animals
The EU had a bovine animal population of 76 million in 2021. (1)(2).
- Belgium: Another key player in beef production renowned for the Belgian Blue Breed.
- France: Accounts for 23% of the EU’s bovine population.
- Italy: Significant production, with notable contributions to the EU's beef and veal output.
- Poland: Second largest beef exporter in the Union (intra-EU trade).
- Spain: Fourth largest beef producer (European Commission).

Sheep
The EU had 60 million sheep in 2021, with significant populations in Spain, France, and Greece (1).
Production facts among SELMA members:
- Spain: 25% of the EU’s sheep population, making the country a major player in sheep farming.
- France: 12% of the EU’s sheep population, with extensive sheep farming across various regions.
- Greece: Significant contributor, with about 14.3% of the EU’s sheep population.

Goats
The EU had 11 million goats in 2021, with significant populations in Spain, France, and Greece (1).
Production facts among SELMA members:
- Greece: 25% of the EU’s goat population, making Greece a leader in goat farming.
- Spain: 23% of the bloc’s goat population, representing the country’s significant goat farming activities.
