Who we are

Our association brings together leading organisations from key EU countries to enhance knowledge-sharing, advocate for the interests of our members, and drive forward sustainable livestock and meat production practices.

Together, we are committed to advancing the sustainability, innovation, and competitiveness of the European livestock and meat industry. Our collective goal is to ensure that the sector thrives while adhering to the highest standards of environmental protection, animal welfare, and product quality.

At SELMA, we leverage our diverse expertise and strong network to help policy-makers at the European level, ensuring that the voices of our members are heard and their interests are represented. Our initiatives are designed to support sustainable practices, enhance market opportunities, and promote the value of European meat products both within and beyond the EU.

Join us in our mission to build a resilient, sustainable, and thriving livestock sector in Europe. Together, we can shape a future where farming and food production are not only profitable, but also sustainable and beneficial for society and the environment.

EU Policy

Sustainability

  • For generations, sustainability has been integral to the practices of livestock farmers across Europe. Ensuring that a farm can be handed down to the next generation is every farmer’s foremost priority and greatest accomplishment.

  • At SELMA, we view sustainability as a multifaceted concept encompassing social, economic, and environmental dimensions. We advocate for comprehensive agricultural policies that address complex issues such as food security, fair compensation, generational renewal, and adaptation to climate change.

Health & nutrition

  • Meat has a high nutritional value and is an integral part of a healthy diet.  As food producers, our core mission is to provide consumers with choices that are high quality, nutritious and safe.

  • At SELMA, we support policies encouraging consumers to take up a balanced and varied diet featuring all types of products (including meat).  Preserving consumers’ ability to select meat products that align with individual tastes, dietary preferences, and nutritional needs is a priority for us.

  • Throughout the production chain, from farm to butcher, we uphold stringent sanitary standards to safeguard consumer health.

Trade

  • The Union trade policy gives farmers a great opportunity to expand their businesses beyond Europe, thereby boosting the EU’s trade balance and economic growth.

  • All operators from the European livestock sector are dedicated to making their high-quality products accessible to consumers worldwide.

  • At SELMA, we firmly support the EU’s coordinated efforts to promote all European food products. We also advocate for the principle of reciprocity in standards, which should be a cornerstone of all trade agreements and policies.
