Edok

Greece

Established in 2013, the National Interprofessional Organisation of the Meat Sector (EDOK) has been officially recognised by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. EDOK is the pioneering interprofessional organisation of its kind in Greece, gathering representatives from  production, trade, and processing organisations

Its formation is the result of a long-term process that began at the start of the decade. In a time of prolonged economic crisis at both Greek and European levels, it is crucial to seek effective solutions through unified efforts in order to anticipate and manage market dysfunctions, and to develop strategies for smooth professional collaboration. EDOK fosters dialogue among its members and with institutional bodies, facilitating solution building and participation in policy formulation. Our aim is to support the maintenance and growth of economic activities in the sector and guide our members towards sustainable development. Our activities also focus on raising public awareness about the economic, social, environmental, and cultural significance of meat products.

Activities

EDOK’s main areas of activities are:

  • Contributing to the organisation and management of market.
  • Supporting actions aimed at maximising the added value of the primary and secondary sectors.
  • Market Improvement Initiatives focusing on the functioning, control, and transparency of the market.
  • Strengthening measures for product safety and quality, as well as promotion of high-quality products.
  • Concluding agreements and participating in programs to support and promote meat products in Greek and international markets: EDOK has successfully executed three promotional programs for lamb meat, totaling eight million euros. The programs restored prices, significantly increased consumption (mainly in the food service sector), boosted exports, and highlighted the country’s strength in lamb production. These campaigns targeted Greece, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
  • Participating in national and international bodies and organisations that directly or indirectly promote the broader interests of the sector, such as SELMA.
  • Implementing joint actions with professional bodies and other organisations that align with the general interest and comply with European Union rules.
  • Defending the common interests of Member National Professional Organisations  and promoting the establishment of interprofessional agreements among its members
  • Applied Research and Development Programs: Participating in proposals and implementing applied research, information, and development programs:  Recently, EDOK joined a genetic improvement program under the Recovery Fund, spotlighting meat-producing sheep farming as a new productive sector in Greece. Evaluations of two INTERREG programs are pending, with future aims set on « Research – Innovate, » HORIZON, ERASMUS, LIFE, and other European programs.
